Ian Wall

Ian Wall, Director
Ian graduated from Sheffield University's Department of Archaeology and Prehistory in 1986 and has a City & Guilds qualification in Adult Education. He started working at Creswell Crags in 1987 on the excavation in Pin Hole Cave and has since supervised on a number of different period excavations in the Creswell Crags Heritage area. Since then Ian has completed the MA in Museum Studies at the University of Leicester and has worked in a number of roles at the Crags. He is now Director and is responsible for strategic and financial management and for major development projects.

John Scott

John Scott, Visitor Operations and Project Manager
John's relationship with Creswell Heritage Trust began in 1991, joining the then very small team as a Ranger. In this role, John has developed a wealth of experience within the areas of environmental and heritage interpretation, education and visitor services, leading him to undertake a Heritage Studies Postgraduate Diploma at Nottingham Trent University in 1998.
John has developed particular interest and skills in the area of Community Heritage. Heading up the Heritage Trust's 'Pride of Place' project team John has had great success exploring and shaping the practical role that heritage can play within regeneration, community/youth services, education/skills development and tourism. John is also currently providing support for the Director, assisting with the co-ordination of the Trust's various projects and activities. Outside work, John lists his interests as contemporary art, mountain biking and tinkering with old houses, old boats and old cars.

John Charlesworth

John Charlesworth, Heritage Interpretation Officer
John joined the Crags as Heritage Outreach Officer in 2001 after gaining a postgraduate Diploma in Heritage Studies at Nottingham Trent University. He was originally part of the Pride of Place project, a successful experiment in the use of heritage as a medium for regenerating old coalfield communities. He is now responsible for directing a project to interpret the site creatively in order to make it more accessible for the local educational community, and engaging other visitors in all aspects of the site.

Oliver Brown, Events and Communications Officer
Ol graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2002 with a BSc in Artificial Intelligence. He worked in many very different places, including doing conservation work in the middle of the African savanna, until 2004 when he joined the Creswell Crags team. He first joined the team as a Warden, then became a Seasonal Interpretive Heritage Officer, and is now our Rock Art Events and Communications Officer. He is jointly responsible for the visitor services and education team so a lot of his time is spent with schools or public groups, guiding tours, storytelling, etc. The rest of his time is spent promoting the site and the rock art and developing and helping to run events and activities on and off site.

David Osborne

David Osborne, Heritage Officer (Collections)
David graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2004 with a BA in Archaeology. He has recently completed a postgraduate Diploma in Museum and Heritage Management, which will turn into an MA on completion of his thesis. Whilst studying he volunteered on many excavations in England as well as one in Greece, and volunteered at the Crags before taking up his position here. His present role is to care for the museum's collection of fossil material and to make the collection accessible to more people.

Donna Booth

Donna Booth, Community Development Officer
Donna worked as a self-employed hair stylist in Sheffield for 12 years before going back into adult education. She graduated as a mature student at Sheffield Hallam University in 2005 earning a BSc in Environmental Conservation Management. Donna has been involved in various roles with the Trust since 2002. She is now providing officer support, making links between the site and the local communities. She also works closely with a number of youth groups, developing programmes based around Ice Age survival and construction.

Anna Griffiths

Anna Griffiths, Heritage Officer
Anna graduated from the University of Nottingham with a BA in Archaeology and Classical Civilisation in 2005. She then went on to complete a MA in Museum and Heritage Management at Nottingham Trent. Anna started volunteering at the Crags in 2005, partaking and assisting in various roles, in order to gain experience in the heritage sector. Now working as part of the Ranger team, Anna is involved in delivering a range of visitor services and projects. This includes organising and running school visits to the Crags, and leading public cave tours. Anna has a keen interest in travel; particularly to sites and countries of historical and archaeological importance.

Pete Clegg

Pete Clegg, Mansfield Heritage Interpretation Officer
Pete studied part-time for a BSc in Natural & Human Environments at the University of Sheffield and went on to take an MA in Landscape Archaeology, graduating in 2004. After completing a community wildlife identification and recording project for Weston Park Museum in Sheffield, Pete joined Creswell Heritage Trust in 2007 as Mansfield Heritage Interpretation Officer to develop a multimedia trail for the town centre.
Pete is interested in landscape study and particularly inter-relationships between archaeology and the natural sciences. He is also a keen wildlife photographer.

Maria Smith

Maria Smith, Peak-Season Heritage Officer
Maria started as volunteer at the Creswell Heritage Trust in April 2007. This summer she has the role of peak seasonal heritage ranger for six weeks. This mainly involves giving guided tours of the caves, childrens activities, site patrols and helping out with projects. She studied History for her degree at Leeds University and is currently finishing off a Masters degree at York University in Heritage Management. She hopes to have a career in the heritage sector.

James Anderson

James Anderson, Warden
James has a National Diploma in Countryside Management; this helps him in his job which involves patrolling the site daily. He also he has the job of site maintenance, which includes mowing and strimming through the summer months to woodland management and other jobs through the winter. Part of his work involves improving the biodiversity of the site, putting together management plans for species and habitats and working in partnership with other organisations to improve the fauna and flora. Jim works with many of our volunteers, and involves them in the maintenance of the site. When not at work, you will usually find him taking part in some sort of outdoor activity. He loves rambling, backpacking, caving and anything that gets him close to nature.

Henry Higgins

Henry Higgins, Warden
Henry worked for HM Forces RAF for 15 years, and has spent 30 years in industry as an instrument/electrical technician. He is currently working as a Warden for the Heritage Trust, responsible for general site maintenance and security. His vast experience of electrical and mechanical maintenance has proved invaluable in his practical work for the Trust. Henry has also now developed a wide range of new skills needed for the maintenance and conservation of ecologically sensitive sites such as Creswell Crags.

Paul Dial

Paul Dial, Warden
Paul is a part-time student at Sheffield University, studying through the Institute of Lifelong Learning. He is working towards a BSc in Natural and Human Environment along with Archaeology. He began to volunteer at Creswell Crags in 2007, mainly doing data input for the Crags' important archaeological collection. He also had the opportunity to volunteer on the excavation that took place outside Church Hole Cave in the summer of 2007. He now works part-time as a Warden and takes a great interest in the biodiversity of the site, as well as carrying out patrols and maintenance work.
Paul's interests include Derbyshire pre-history and any outdoor pursuits, such as mountain biking, backpacking and hill walking.

Joan Chambers, Sales and Information Assistant
Joan, who has lived locally for many years, has been part of the team since 1997. She is a dedicated member of our front of house staff, always willing to assist and help you with enquiries. Joan has many years' retail and customer care experience.

Christine Walker, Sales and Information Assistant
Christine has worked in a retail and customer care environment for over thirty years, and has a great deal of experience in working with people. She has now worked at Creswell Crags since 1998. She is always happy to advise you on our events here at the Crags, or to help you choose that special gift.

Steve Elliot, Volunteer
Steve is a Business Information Systems student at Sheffield Hallam University. He has previously been employed full time at the Heritage Trust, and is now working with us as a volunteer, utilising his knowledge of IT applications to collate qualitative and quantitative information on visitors. This invaluable information is used in the Trust's continued operations and development.
