Under the direction of the Operations Manager the post holder will head the team of Information and Sales Assistants who staff the reception and museum shop at Creswell Crags. You will be required to maintain the shop as a vibrant and engaging retail experience ensuring that the shop is clean and well stocked, and entering stock onto the stock control software. You will carry out administrative support, ensuring proper records are kept of all shop takings. You will also be required to deliver an exceptional level of customer care, providing general information about Creswell Crags to visitors, taking bookings and providing ticket sales for tours, events and exhibitions.

This role involves weekend working as well as occasional evenings and bank holidays.


Leadership & Management

  • To line manage the Front of House Assistants including compiling rotas, conducting training, implementing action plans and targets at the instruction of the Operations Manager, covering lunch breaks.

  • To gain an understanding of the cafe in order to assist in cases of staff sickness or holiday

  • To act as a reserve Duty Manager for the site, including learning the opening and closing procedures, assisting with site safety and security throughout the day and finding staff cover in incidences of illness


    Customer Services

  • To sell tickets and shop stock during opening hours, including consulting on products and up-selling

  • To provide the public with information and assistance concerning the site and building, the exhibitions, tours and extra activities

  • To be familiar with all till operations and with systems of sale transactions including cash, cheque and credit cards

  • To stock shelves and arrange stock on sale for display as directed by the operations manager. This includes re-stocking shelves throughout the day, merchandising and displaying new products prominently

  • To store deliveries quickly and appropriately and to keep the front desk area clear from clutter

  • To ensure the shop is clean and presentable during opening hours. This may include light cleaning duties such as dusting of shelves

  • To assist with visiting schools as requested including providing information and advice


Administration & Financial Management

  • Work as part of the Creswell Crags staff team to maximise and prioritise income generation

  • To stock shelves as required and to display goods in innovative and attractive ways

  • To monitor stock levels of sales and free goods including checking, recording, and storage of deliveries appropriately

  • To re-order stock and research new products and suppliers

  • To monitor price fluctuations, highlight any major changes to the Operations Manager and to price goods accordingly

  • To complete the record of sales at the end of each day

  • To organise and conduct stock-takes under the direction of the Operations Manager

  • To maximise  cost effectiveness of resources

  • To work alongside Derbyshire County Council in managing their mobility scooter scheme at Creswell Crags



  • To be available to work in accordance with the needs of the business, in particular at weekends, bank holidays and school holidays.

  • To be of smart, clean and presentable appearance at all times, taking care of personal hygiene. This includes abiding by the dress code which you will be provided with

  • Throughout the working day conduct yourself in a friendly, helpful and professional manner around customers, visitors and other members of staff

  • To undertake any training necessary associated with the duties of the post and feel comfortable that you have received adequate training or instruction from the manager or supervisor before embarking on any task

  • To ensure that you and those under your supervision follow the Trust’s Health & Safety Policy and pay attention to area-specific risk assessments

  • To ensure you carry out your duties in a safe and efficient manner and do not endanger yourself or others.

  • To report any defects and / or potential hazards you notice to your line manager

  • To operate communications equipment (2-way radios, telephones and staff emails) as required

  • To report or discuss any other matters of concern you may have with the your line manager

  • To carry out any other duties which may reasonably be regarded as within the nature of the duties and responsibilities of the post as defined, subject to the proviso that normally any changes of a permanent nature shall be incorporated into the Job Description in specific terms 








Educated to GCSE level English, Maths grade C or above



Sound knowledge of shop operations including cash/ income handling processes



Knowledge of retail display and promotion techniques



Understanding of basic health and safety procedures



Understanding of customer service standards



Understanding of heritage and conservation



First Aid trained







Strong team working and management skills



Good written and verbal communication skills including public presentation and telephone manner
