Photograph of west entrance taken during 1876 excavation at Robin Hood Cave
This photograph, taken by R.Keene of Derby in 1876, shows the west entrance to Robin Hood Cave during the excavations by Dawkins, Heath and Mello. The spoil heap leading up to the entrance gives some idea of the volume of deposits removed from the cave. To the left is the rock dump and to the right finer material, probably from sieves. The wooden structure may be either a sorting table or, more possibly, a frame for a sieve. A plank leads up to it, perhaps part of a barrow run. The people in the photograph cannot be identified.
