Excavation finds

Photograph of objects excavated from Pin Hole and Robin Hood Cave in 1875.

This photograph of finds made at Creswell Crags in 1875 shows part of the Magens Mello collection. The artefacts and bones have been pinned to a display board which rests on a chair. For some of the objects the sites where they were recovered is indicated by the letters P (Pin Hole) and R (Robin Hood Cave) and most of them survive in museum collections while others are lost. Notable finds are jaws of spotted hyaena and giant deer, and teeth of mammoth and woolly rhinoceros.

A copy of the photograph was reproduced as a plate in the second edition (1891) of the Hand-book to the Geology of Derbyshire by Mello.
