Bison leg bone

Lower front leg bone of a bison from Robin Hood Cave. Last Ice Age (Middle Devensian).

This bone is part of the lower front leg (radius) of a bison (Bison priscus) found in Robin Hood Cave in 1875. The context of this find is unknown although staining and traces of sediment adhering to the bone surface might suggest that it was one of the bison bones described by Mello as coming from the base of a red sand at the cave entrance. These bones, Mello noted, lacked traces of gnawing, as does this bone. The most likely age for this specimen is the early or middle part of the Last Cold Stage.
