Photograph of the excavation by the Hunter Archaeological Society in 1960 at Ash Tree Cave
Two photographs taken in 1960 during the excavation at Ash Tree Cave, near Whitwell, Derbyshire. The excavation was being undertaken jointly by the Hunter Archaeological Society and Cambridge University.
The photographs show two trenches. The longer trench was machine excavated into the valley sediments of Burnhill Grips. The only archaeological finds from these trenches were Roman and more recent material although the machine cut trench penetrated deposits which were probably laid down during the Pleistocene.
