Excavation Photograph

Photograph of A.L. Armstrong and G.A.Garfitt in Pin Hole soon after 1924.

This photograph shows A.L. Armstrong (background) and G.A. Garfitt (foreground) working by candle light in Pin Hole. Garfitt is holding a sieve. In an article written in 1925 for Discovery, Armstrong remarked '..The earth is very fine and dry and as the tiny bones of these creatures [rodents] pass freely through the sieve, they are difficult to detect and retrieve; work in which Mr.Garfitt excels..'.

The slant of the cave wall from top left to bottom right and the deposits sloping gently upwards towards the back of the cave are clearly visible. It is thought that the photograph was taken at an early stage of the excavation which began in 1924.
