| The
excavations at the cave of Dog Hole are something of a mystery.
Robert Laing, a Newcastle doctor, is thought to have carried
out excavations here that practically cleared out the cave.
Laing was working sometime before 1889. Unfortunately, none
of the finds recovered from the site are known to survive.
However, investigations during the 1980s on the spoil tip
outside the cave indicated bones dated to the middle of the
Last Ice Age including lion, spotted hyaena, woolly rhinoceros, horse
and reindeer. A few flint tools have also been collected as
casual finds. |
