Bone needle Bone awl

Bone was used to make various tools.

This needle was cut from the bone shaft using a flint burin and then smoothed to the required shape. Bone was also shaped into points and used as weapon tips.

The back leg bones of hares, made excellent awls for piercing animal hide.

The toe bones of reindeer are hollow. By making a hole in one side they can be turned into whistles. The size and shape of the whole changes the sound it will make when blown. The sound is like that of a bird. Hunters might have used such whistles so they could keep in touch with each other without disturbing the animals. They might also have been used to make music.
