Standing
at this end of the gorge on a summer's day, with the valley
stretching away from us, it is difficult to imagine the
same place during the Ice Age, more than 10,000 years ago.
The lake would not have existed. Instead there would have
been a stream meandering through the gorge. The water and
protective slopes of the valley would have attracted animals
such as mammoth, wild horse, bison and reindeer, as well
as their predators: lions, wolves, spotted hyaenas and people.
Hunters could have watched the game from high points in
the valley, setting up temporary camps in caves and under
rock overhangs where they could eat, sleep and make stone
tools, as well as all sorts of other equipment using parts
of the animals they killed.
Lets
explore the caves today and discover the stories they can
tell.
