We would have found it difficult to walk back this far before Laing dug away the cave earth. This part of the cave was more or less full of sediment to the roof. Amazingly, Laing found the bones of hippopotamus in this chamber, an animal living at Creswell 120,000 years ago, even before the last Ice Age. With just under two metres of sediment beneath our feet who knows what discoveries have yet to be made.
