We're standing in the entrance chamber of Church Hole where Mello and Heath excavated. They paid workmen to use pick axes and shovels and the whole of this area was cleared in a matter of days. After a few more days they had pressed on 50 metres down the cave passage.

Finds of flint tools and bones of Ice Age animals from this cave tempted the excavators to start exploring Robin Hood Cave, the largest of the caves at Creswell Crags.

The layers of earth which had washed into the cave lay beneath this flowstone, a hard stalagmitic material. The excavators had to break through this level to remove the soft cave earth underneath. At this point they dug down about one and a half metres to the present floor level.
