Life On The Edge

Life on the edge
This challenge is for uniformed groups such as Brownie units, Guide units and Cub packs, and Scout troops, who are looking for an adventure of mammoth proportions! Journey back to the Ice Age to see if you have got what it takes to survive Life on the Edge, by exploring caves, building shelters, lighting fires, and creating Stone Age art, just as our ancestors did here at Creswell Crags over 12,000 years ago.
At the end of the day, each participant who has completed at least two parts of each activity will receive a Creswell Crags Life on the Edge challenge badge.
Dates and Times
This activity day will run Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year, and during the week during the school holidays, subject to availability – please contact us, either by emailing
The activity day runs from 10:00 – 14:30.

The number of accompanying leaders/adults included for free with each group varies depending on the age range of the group, in keeping with Girlguiding and the Scout Association’s ratios.

---|---|---|---|---|
5 – 8 | Rainbows & Beavers | 5* | 10* | 15* |

* For the Life in the Ice Age Cave Tour, health and safety regulations stipulate that only 29 people may be in Robin Hood Cave at once. Therefore if you are a Beaver or Rainbow group with the maximum of 24/48/72 children, one leader accompanying each tribe will be asked to wait at the cave entrance, so that this maximum (which includes the tour guide) will not be exceeded. We have also found that this is useful for these younger groups, as on occasion a child may not wish to venture too far into the cave, and so it is useful to have a leader outside with whom they can wait.
Additional adults will be charged at £8 each. Individual carers may accompany the group for free, but the overall group size must not exceed 28.
Groups larger than 24 will have to split into smaller groups of up to 24 children and 3/4/5 adults, due to health and safety restrictions in Robin Hood Cave.
