Life on the Edge Challenge

This challenge is for uniformed groups such as Brownie units, Guide units and Cub packs, and Scout troops, who are looking for an adventure of mammoth proportions! Journey back to the Ice Age to see if you have got what it takes to survive Life on the Edge, by exploring caves, building shelters, lighting fires, and creating Stone Age art, just as our ancestors did here at Creswell Crags over 12,000 years ago.

At the end of the day, each participant who has completed at least two parts of each activity will receive a Creswell Crags Life on the Edge challenge badge.

Activity 1: Life in the Ice Age Cave Tour (1 hour)

Activity 2: Survival Skills (1 hour)

Activity 3: Art of the Ancients (1 hour)

Activity 1: Life in the Ice Age Cave Tour (1 hour)

  • Explore a cave – visit the Stone Age dwelling of people who lived during the Ice Age
  • Artefact handling – hold and look at different Stone Age tools and weapons
  • Venture into the dark – go right to the back of the cave to see where Ice Age predators made their dens…

Activity 2: Survival Skills (1 hour)

  • Shelter Building – make a shelter for your small group using branches and animal skins
  • Fire building – gather the different types of material to start a fire (tinder, kindling, fuel), and learn how to construct a fire
  • Fire Lighting – use the bow and drill method to try and create fire. For older children (10+), have a go with flint and steel
  • Cook on an open fire – learn about the different ways you can cook on an open fire, and toast marshmallows on the fire you have created

Activity 3: Art of the Ancients (1 hour)

  • Britain’s oldest art – find out all about the art at Creswell Crags. How old is it? What are the pictures meant to be? How were they drawn?
  • Cave art – use charcoal to decorate a cave wall with animals from the Ice Age
  • Hand stencils – make your mark Stone Age style by creating a splatter stencil of your handprint
  • Animal sculptures – create a piece of portable art out of clay
  • Temporary collage – gather natural materials (leaves, sticks, feathers, etc) to create a piece of art that won’t stand the test of time.

Dates and Times

This activity day will run Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year, and during the week during the school holidays, subject to availability – please contact us, either by emailing activities@creswell-crags.org.uk or ringing 01909 720378, to enquire about availability. Bookings must be made at least a month in advance.

The activity day runs from 10:00 – 14:30.

Price

£12 per child. This includes all activities and the Life on the Edge challenge badge.

The number of accompanying leaders/adults included for free with each group varies depending on the age range of the group, in keeping with Girlguiding and the Scout Association’s ratios.

Number of free adults/leaders:

Age range Groups up to 24 children up to 48 children up to 72 children
5 – 8 Rainbows & Beavers 5* 10* 15*
7 – 10 Brownies & Cubs 4 8 12
11 – 14 Guides & Scouts 3 6 9

* For the Life in the Ice Age Cave Tour, health and safety regulations stipulate that only 29 people may be in Robin Hood Cave at once. Therefore if you are a Beaver or Rainbow group with the maximum of 24/48/72 children, one leader accompanying each tribe will be asked to wait at the cave entrance, so that this maximum (which includes the tour guide) will not be exceeded. We have also found that this is useful for these younger groups, as on occasion a child may not wish to venture too far into the cave, and so it is useful to have a leader outside with whom they can wait.

Additional adults will be charged at £8 each. Individual carers may accompany the group for free, but the overall group size must not exceed 28.

Groups larger than 24 will have to split into smaller groups of up to 24 children and 3/4/5 adults, due to health and safety restrictions in Robin Hood Cave.
